Chicago Chef Charlie Trotter died on Tuesday morning, NBC Chicago reports.
The 54-year-old restaurateur was found unresponsive in his Chicago home, according to the city’s fire department. He was later pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Chicago police have opened an investigation into Trotter’s death.
Trotter was one of Chicago’s first celebrity chefs. He opened his namesake restaurant in the city's Lincoln Park back in 1987, without any formal culinary training. Trotter went on to gather a formiddable number of accolades during his 25 years at the restaurant. Many of today’s top chefs have passed through his kitchen—including Grant Achatz, Giuseppi Tentori, and Mindy Segal.
